Gainesville, FL – Santa Fe's Alex Goebel picked a good time to produce the first home run of his collegiate career Monday afternoon, knocking a two run bomb out against Polk State as one of just three SF hits in a 5-4 win. Despite the inability to come up with any consistent offense, the Saints (9-3) did what winning teams do and took advantage of mistakes by the opponent, scoring two runs off Eagle errors.
All five of the Santa Fe runs came in the first three innings, and the bullpen had to hold off a charging PSC team down the stretch to earn SF their ninth win.
Chris Hopkins (3-0) picked up his third win with five innings of relief work, and now has 18 strikeouts in 15.1 innings pitched, with just 10 hits allowed. Troy Bacon was equally effective, striking out six in three innings with just one hit allowed for his second save. SF combined to strikeout 14 batters.
Goebel provided nearly all of the Saints offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Cole Parks was 1-for-4 for the only other SF hit. His hit was initially rules an error and then changed to a hit later.
The Saints will head back out on the road on Wednesday to Tifton, GA for a game against Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College at 3:00 PM. Fans can keep up with live stats at www.santafesaints.com.
