Gainesville, FL – Former Santa Fe Saint Mallex Smith got the call on Sunday that every professional baseball player dreams of when the Atlanta Braves called him up from AAA Gwinett to join the Major League roster. He is expected to take over centerfield duties close to full time for the injured Ender Inciarte. The Braves take on the Washington Nationals tonight at 7:05 PM. Mallex is in the lineup and hitting leadoff against former Cy Young award winner Max Scherzer.
Smith is a career .296 hitter in the minor leagues, stole 59 bases last year split between AA and AAA, and had 88 steals the year before in A ball. In 394 career minor league games he has 227 steals, 110 RBI, 13 homeruns, 19 triples, and 67 doubles.
Smith joins Keon Broxton as one of two Saints in the Major Leagues this season.
