Gainesville, FL – For the first time in their careers, two former Santa Fe College standouts, and current Major Baseball Players, Mallex Smith and Keon Broxton will be on the same field when the Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers face off in St. Petersburg tonight at 7:10 p.m. Both players man centerfield for their respective teams.
Smith, who played one season for the Saints in 2012, is hitting .287 for the Rays, with two homeruns, 16 stolen bases, 10 RBI and 30 runs scored in 181 at bats. He's even better at Tropicana Field, hitting .342 at home. He's hit safely in his last six games, his third such streak of at least six games this season. He had a career high 12 game hit streak from June 9-21, six of those multiple hit games.
Broxton, who's lone season in Saints blue and white came in 2009 as a member of the FCSAA State Championship team and NJCAA Runners-up, is hitting .222 with 14 homeruns, 17 stolen bases and 50 runs scored in 302 at bats for Milwaukee. Since being recalled from AAA he has three hits in his last three games, including a double and a RBI single. He's one of only 12 players in the MLB with 14 or more homeruns and double digit stolen bases, in company with players such as Paul Goldschmidt, Mookie Betts, Mike Trout, and Jose Altuve.
The Rays and Brewers will play the second game of their series on Saturday, August 5 at 6:10 p.m. and wrap up the three game series on Sunday, August 6 at 1:10 p.m.
