With the season coming to a close, the Santa Fe Saints strengthened their hold on fourth place in the Mid-Florida Conference with 11-1 and 3-2 wins over Daytona State College Saturday afternoon in Gainesville.

The MFC winner automatically advances to the Florida College System Activities Association State Tournament with second through fourth place teams competing in the MFC Tournament for a chance to advance. The Saints presently have a solid grip on fourth place with a chance to move up.

The Saints laid everything on the table in game one Saturday, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first to take control as Gabi Mathre (10-8)and Tihana Zupanic kept the Falcon bats quiet in the lopsided 11-1 win.

"We hit through the order in the first inning better that we have all year," said SF coach Lindsay Fico. "Our bats came out on fire."

Cameron Trehy had a two-run single in the inning that saw the Saints score all five runs before recording the second out and Emily Yakel topped things off with her 10th home run of the year in the sixth.

Game two was much closer with the Saints erasing a 1-0 deficit with a two-run third.

Kaitlyn Bennett got things started with a leadoff single and scored one out later on a single by Adriana Garip. Donnie Gobourne brought home the second run with a sacrifice fly to score Karina Ortiz-Munoz later in the inning. Bennett drove home pinch runner Alanis Mercado with what proved to be the winning run one inning later.

Zupanic (5-6) earned the win with four innings of 2-hit relief of starter Jamie Adams.

"We pitched by committee pretty much all day," said Fico. "They all did a good job of keeping the game under control."

Jolie Watson was a perfect 4-for-4 in the first game while Garip, Gobourne and Trehy each had three hits on the day. Gobourne earned the save in the nightcap.

The Saints (21-23, 9-9 MFC) will host Lake-Sumter State College for a doubleheader Sunday as a makeup of a rainout earlier this week with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 1 p.m.
