Strong Team Effort Leads Saints Past MDC, 80-72

November 1, 2014

Gainesville, FL – Sonya Franklin scored 17 points off the bench and Deja McPhee led the Saints in scoring for the second night in a row with 23 as FCSAA #9 Santa Fe (2-0) defeated a tough Miami Dade College team 80-72 in Gainesville on Saturday afternoon.

Franklin was an efficient 6-for-12 from the field and nailed three of her five three point attempts in just her second collegiate game.  Gainesville High School graduate McPhee did a good job getting to the free throw line where she scored 10 of her 23 points.

The game was close throughout the first half as the Saints pulled slightly ahead towards the end of the first 20 minutes for a 43-40 lead at the break.  In the second half Franklin did most of her damage, helping the Saints build as much as an 11 point margin on the way to the eight point win.

The Saints dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Sharks 56-33 and outscored MDC from the free throw line 19-9.

Four players scored in double figures for SF, including 11 from Kayla Lovett, and a 10 point, 10 rebound performance from Karrah Johnson.

Santa Fe will hit the road for a little over three weeks before returning home for a contest, starting their road trip on Friday, November 7 in Marianna against Chipola College at 8:00 PM.
