Panama City, FL – Santa Fe sophomore outside hitter Savannah Young led the FCSAA #4 Saints to two victories Friday afternoon at the Gulf Coast State College Tournament, the first over Andrew College in straight sets (25-3, 25-10, 25-12) and the second over Southern Union College, also in straight sets (25-10, 25-20, 25-16). Young especially shined in match two, picking up 11 kills in 20 attempts. She was equally effective in the first match win, totaling seven kills on 12 attempts.
Chelsea Dola had a career high 15 assists to help lead the way against Andrew College, and she also picked up three service aces along the way. The Saints (8-1) made quick work of their first match of the day, thanks in part to a sparkling .426 hitting percentage.
"This was a good focused effort by our players," said SF Coach Nick Cheronis. "They came out on task from the beginning of the match to the end. This was a great start to the tournament."
The match against Southern Union was all Young as she propelled the Saints to their second straight set victory. Kaylin Powell and Ruth Harrington were also effective, picking up eight kills each, and Farah Rajaee had a game high 38 assists. Ann-Lorrayne Bzoch displayed solid defense, digging out a team high 23 balls.
"Savannah had a big game for us," said Cheronis. "Southern Union was a tough, scrappy competitor. I give a lot of credit to our players for fighting tooth and nail."
Santa Fe continues in Panama City on Saturday against Snead State Community College at 3:00 PM, and then wrap up against Gadsden State Community College at 5:00 PM.
