HENDRY AND THE SAINTS DEFEAT ST. JOHN'S RIVER 3-1 FOR FIRST MFC WIN
Gainesville, FL – Santa Fe freshman outside hitter Amber Hendry came off the bench to give the Saints (12-2, 1-0 MFC) a huge lift after a set one loss to St. John's River State College, leading SF to three straight set wins for their first ever Mid-Florida Conference victory (15-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-21). Hendry finished the match with a career high 13 kills, hitting .500, eight digs, and three service aces.
"I thought Amber did a great job for us tonight," said SF Coach Nick Cheronis. "She gave us the spark we needed after a slow start."
The Saints came out flat in the first set, falling behind early. They were never able to regain their footing and fell 25-15 to the aggressive Vikings.
Set two was a different story as SF cleaned up their service receptions and gave themselves many more scoring opportunities in route to a 25-15 win.
The third set was the Amber Hendry show as she piled up five kills on eight attempts, and added a block for good measure. The Santa Fe defense also improved, holding St. John's to a -.115 hitting percentage.
Midway through the fourth set the score was knotted up at 15, but a late run by the Saints helped them pull away for the 25-21 win, sealing the match.
The Saints continue in the Mid-Florida Conference when Florida State College-Jacksonville comes to Gainesville for a match on Thursday, September 25 at 7:00 PM.
