Gainesville, FL – Sophomores Savannah Young and Ruth Harrington played the final home match of their Santa Fe careers on Thursday night and went out in style, leading the Saints to a quick 3-0 victory over Gulf Coast State College in front of a supportive home crowd.
"What a great way to finish our first home season," said SF Coach Nick Cheronis. "Everyone played with a love for the game and a passion for each other. It was really fun for me to watch".
Harrington finished with 10 kills and Savannah Young had five kills and 10 digs. Freshman Kaylin Powell led the offensive attack with 11 kills.
The Mid-Florida Conference champion Saints (29-4, 8-2 MFC) came out fast and cruised to a set one victory 25-11. Set two was much of the same as SF continued their torrid play, defeating the Panhandle Conference champions 25-13. The Commodores (26-9) were more competitive in the third set, but a late rally by the Saints gave them a 25-19 win, and the straight set victory.
The Saints will play two more regular season games on Saturday in Bradenton before heading to the State Tournament November 6-9. First up is a match against the #2 team in the FCSAA, State College of Florida on Saturday at 11:00 AM, and then a match against Palm Beach State College at 1:00 PM. Both teams have qualified for the State Tournament.
