Williams and the Saints Come from Behind for Five Set Win Over Gulf Coast

August 28, 2015

Gainesville, FL – For the second straight match, the FCSAA #4/NJCAA #17 Santa Fe Saints (2-0) went the distance, defeating Gulf Coast State College in five sets, two days after picking up a five set victory over Pasco Hernando State in their season opener.  Freshman Nadine Williams led the way, tallying 16 kills, and three blocks, leading the team in scoring once again.

The Commodores got off to a hot start, controlling the action in the first set in route to a 25-23 win, holding off a hard charging Saints team down the stretch.  Santa Fe dominated the second set to tie things up at 1-1, but Gulf Coast answered with a 10-0 run in the third set to go ahead 2-1.

Needing to win the last two sets, Santa Fe stepped up and answered with their best volleyball of the night to outscore the Commodores 40-26 over the final two to move to 2-0 on the season.

Kaylin Powell was a force in the middle with 10 kills, three blocks, and a .471 hitting percentage, Amber Hendry had eight kills and two blocks, and Julie Fuchs had eight kills and two blocks.

The Saints will continue in the Best Western Gateway Grand Santa Fe Classic on Saturday, August 29 at 9:00 AM against Eastern Florida State College, and at 4:00 PM against FCSAA #2/NJCAA #10 State College of Florida.

Fans can watch both games live on NJCAA TV.
