Saints Win 1-0 in 11 Innings
A classic pitcher's' duel where hits were scarce and runs even more so ended in the bottom of the 11th inning with the Saints pushing across the only run of the game without registering a hit.
With one out and the scored tied 0-0, Jonathan Logsdon was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a walk to Luis Rodriguez. Chase Frady then hit a ground ball to shortstop that forced Rodriguez at second, but the throw to first to complete the potential inning ending double play was wide of the mark allowing Logsdon to score the winning run.
"We had plenty of chances offensively but just couldn't get the big hit we needed," said SF head coach Johnny Wiggs. "I'm proud of our team hanging in there and finding a way to win."
Saints righthander Anthony Arguelles and Polk State righthander Andrew Long battled each other pitch for pitch for the first seven innings each keeping their opponents off the scoreboard. Arguelles allowed just three hits and recorded 11 strikeouts while Long gave up four hits and had five strikeouts.
The bullpens were just as impressive as the Eagles marched three different pitchers to the mound while Wiggs went with reliable righthander Jake Blair and closer Emanuel Fernandez.
Blair turned in another outstanding performance going 3.1 shutout innings allowing just two hits while striking out seven. Fernandez (2-1) retired the only two batters he faced to earn the win.
"Our pitchers did a great job and kept hanging zeros for us all day," said Wiggs.
Logsdon had two of the Saints five hits in the game.
SF (14-4) is presently ranked third in the state and 15th in the nation.
Saturday's scheduled doubleheader at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College has been cancelled due to bad weather conditions giving the Saints the weekend off before traveling to Winter Haven for a rematch against Polk State at 5 pm.
