Saints Drop MFC Opener to Daytona State, 7-6
The Santa Fe Saints had the potential tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the ninth inning but were unable to push them across in their 7-6 loss to Daytona State College Monday afternoon in Gainesville.
The Saints had plenty of opportunities to win their Mid-Florida Conference opener but came up short in every way imaginable.
"We just gave them every opportunity to win the game," said SF head coach Johnny Wiggs. "We made five errors, we walked seven late in the game and we left 12 runners on base. We still only loss by one, so making one more good pitch, one more play or getting a big hit could have been the difference."
Brooks Walton started and worked into the sixth inning for the Saints with Rob Adams, Jake Blair and Lance Bolton following him to the mound. Blair (3-1) was saddled with the loss.
Chase Frady hit his first home run of the year to lead off the fourth inning for the Saints while Luis Rodriguez and JC Lovelace each had two hits in the game and Coy Phillips had three runs batted in.
The Saints (17-5, 0-1 MFC) will continue the three-game series against the Falcons when they travel to Daytona on Wednesday for a 3 pm game. The two teams will meet again in Gainesville at 3 pm on Friday.
