Saints Win Second Straight Over Daytona, 7-0
Anthony Arguelles shut down the Falcon hitters for seven innings and Jonathan Logsdon was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate for the second consecutive game as the Santa Fe Saints won the rubber match in a three-game series with Daytona State College 7-0 Friday afternoon in Gainesville.
Arguelles (3-0) allowed just two hits, three walks and struck out nine to lower his earned run average to a miniscule 1.38 for the year. The sophomore, righthander out of Christopher Columbus High School in Miami now has a team high 54 strikeouts in 39 innings pitched.
"Anthony really battled for us today," said SF head coach Johnny Wiggs. "He didn't have his best command but just kept hanging zeros for us. Good pitchers do that."
The Saints would get all the offense they would need in the second inning when they pushed across four runs.
Coy Phillips started the inning by reaching on a walk and moved to third on a double by Hunter Corbett. Caleb Stafford followed with a sacrifice fly to score Phillips and, one out later, Zeb Marquis and Nick Herndon drew walks to load the bases. Logsdon followed with a two-run single and Luis Rodriguez then doubled home Herndon.
The Saints added single runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings while Arguelles and relievers Brad Lord and Emanuel Fernandez kept the Falcons (10-9, 1-2 MFC) off the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth innings.
Logsdon continues to swing the hot bat for the Saints as he reached base safely all five times up for the second consecutive game. The second baseman was 9-for-10 in the three game series with DSC and now has a nine-game hitting streak during which he has hit at a .542 clip. He now leads the Saints with a .388 average.
"Logsdon continues to stay on fire with another 4-for-4," said Wiggs. "It was great to bounce back and win the series after an ugly game one loss."
Rodriguez, Corbett and Zeb Marquis each had two hits in the game while Rodriguez' two runs-batted-in moves his team leading total to 25.
SF (19-5, 2-1 MFC), presently ranked second in the state and 14th in the nation, are in a three-way tie for first place in the Mid -Florida Conference with the College of Central Florida and Lake Sumter State College. The Saints will have the weekend off before hosting TNXL Academy for a 3 pm game on Monday and will get back to conference play when they host CF next Friday at 3.
