Baseball Falls to Hillsborough Community College, 11-4
TAMPA, Fla. - Santa Fe College baseball's 2021 season opener arrived Friday as the Saints traveled to play Hillsborough Community College at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla. The host Hawks came away with the 11-4 victory.
The Saints struck first in the contest, plating two runs in the third inning. Jonathan Logsdon brought around Armando Albert with an RBI single, then proceeded to score on a passed ball later in the frame.
Santa Fe starting pitcher Brooks Walton set down the Hawks in order through the first three innings of work and held the 2-0 advantage.
Hillsborough was able to tie the game up in the fourth, scoring two runs and concluding Walton's day with a final line of 4.0 innings pitched, two runs allowed, two hits, two walks, and four strikeouts.
The score would remain tied at 2-2 until the top of the sixth inning, when Santa Fe staked claim to a 4-2 lead on an RBI double from Coy Phillips and a RBI sacrifice fly from Dylan Mock.
From that point on, however, it was all Hillsborough, as the Hawks went in front 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth, then added six more runs in the eighth inning to account for the 11-4 result.
Offensively, the Saints were led by Logsdon and Phillips, who each went 2-of-3 from the dish.
Wiggs' Words
"We gave them too many freebies (walks, hit batsmen, errors) to give ourselves a chance to win," said Head Coach Johnny Wiggs. "Brooks Walton gave us a good start in his first time out, but we struggled in the bullpen. We had some good at-bats at times, but couldn't get the big hit like they did. The good thing is that we get to jump back out there tomorrow to try and play better."
Up Next
The Saints will take to their home field for the first time in 2021, hosting TNXL Academy on Sat., Jan. 23 at 1:00 p.m.
