Baseball Decimates Lake-Sumter Pitching in 19-5 Victory
LEESBURG, Fla. – Santa Fe baseball picked up their 20th win of the season at Lake-Sumter State College on Monday afternoon, exploding offensively in a 19-5 win over the Lakehawks.
It was the Saints' sixth consecutive win and 13th out of the last 14 games. Three of those victories have been over the Lakehawks, and none were more dominant than Monday's result.
Santa Fe, who received votes in the latest NJCAA Division I Coaches' Poll, led 8-0 headed into the sixth inning. Lake-Sumter drew to within three runs, 8-5, after two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Santa Fe, however, brought the Lake-Sumter momentum to a screeching halt by plating a whopping 11 runs in the top half of the eighth frame to invoke the run-rule.
The huge inning featured 15 at-bats, six hits, and three walks along with a couple of hit batsmen and errors from the Lakehawks. Armando Albert provided plenty of offensive pop in the inning, hitting an RBI double before follwing it up with a two-RBI triple his next time up.
Key Statistics
Albert had a huge day from the dish, coming a home run short of the cycle with the triple, two doubles, and a single. He went 4-of-5 with four RBI and three runs scored.
Luis Rodriguez and Dylan Mock each had three hits. Rodriguez drove in three and scored three himself, while Mock finished with four RBI and three runs scored. Nick Hernon had the Saints' lone home run of the game in the third inning, a two-run shot for his first long ball of the year.
Lance Bolton earned his second win of the season, tossing six innings. He allowed just five hits and two earned runs, without walking a batter while notching a season-high seven strikeouts.
Garfield Johns, Eduardo Yepes, and Michael Rodriguez each made appearances out of the bullpen to preserve the win.
Wiggs' Words
"Our hitters did a great job all day," said Head Coach Johnny Wiggs. "Once Lake-Sumter came back from 8-0 to make it 8-5, our guys put the pedal to the floor and exploded for an 11-run inning. Bolton gave us another great start. He really mixed his pitches well. We went through a tough stretch of games lately and I am so proud of our guys effort. We will get a few days to get some rest and gear up for the next 13 games of conference play."
Up Next
Santa Fe (20-8, 10-1 MFC) will play a nonconference game at Pasco-Hernando State College on Friday, March 26 at 3:00 p.m.
