Molly Bender hit two home runs and drove in five as Santa Fe defeated the Polk State Eagles 11-4 on Saturday in game one of the doubleheader.
Santa Fe opened the scoring in the first after Sydney English singled, scoring one run. Santa Fe added two more runs in the bottom of the second on a home run to left field by Bender.
A single by Bender extended the Santa Fe lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning, but an Eagles home run to right field on a full count helped Polk State tie the game at four in the top of the fifth.
The Saints, however, flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on five hits to take the lead, 9-4.
Belle Mancillas led things off in the circle for Santa Fe. The righty surrendered three hits and four runs (two earned) over five innings, striking out five and walking one. Both Skyler Alvarez and Morgyn Stevens each threw shutout innings for Santa Fe in relief.
Santa Fe piled up 18 hits in the game. McKenzie Cox, Rylie Blankenship, Sydney English, Miranda Murch, and Camryn VanGalder each collected multiple hits.
The firepower at the plate continued for Santa Fe as each of their 18 runs were scored via the long ball. The Saints hit nine home runs in the contest, led by McKenzie Cox, who hit three in the 18-3 win.
The Saints were the first to get on the board in the second when Tegan Grizzard homered to left field, scoring two runs.
A home run to center field by Aldridge gave the Polk State Eagles the lead, 3-2, in the top of the third.
The Saints scored five runs on four hits to retake the lead, 7-3 in the third inning.
Chloe Woods earned the win for Santa Fe. The hurler gave up one hit and three runs over four innings, striking out two and walking three. Skyler Alvarez tossed one inning of shutout ball for Santa Fe Saints in relief. The right-handed pitcher allowed zero hits, striking out one and walking none.
Santa Fe Saints scored 11 runs in the fourth inning on the way to victory. McKenzie Cox homered twice to left field (two and three run HR's), Ellie Frierson doubled, scoring two runs, Haylee McCrea singled, scoring one run, and Laura Pierce homered to left field, scoring three runs.
The Saints will host St. Petersburg on Tuesday, March 31st at 2:00pm for a doubleheader.
