Volleyball Begins Conference Play with 3-1 Result at FSCJ
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Mid-Florida Conference play began for Santa Fe College volleyball, and the Saints improved to 4-1 on the season with a 25-20, 19-25, 25-19, 25-15 victory at Florida State College at Jacksonville.
In Set 1, the score was knotted up at 15-15 before the Saints went on a 4-0 spurt to get in front of the Blue Wave, 19-15, forcing an FSCJ timeout.
That run did its damage, and with Santa Fe leading 24-20 later in the set, an FSCJ service error gave the Saints the 25-20 outcome headed into Set 2.
The Blue Wave responded in Set 2, 25-19, to tie it up at a set apiece.
Set 3 started off neck-and-neck, and was tied at 12-12. The Saints proceeded to rattle off six of the next seven points to gain the upper hand, 18-13, capped off by a solo block by Katelyn Crofts at the net.
A Crofts kill also would be the final point of the set, finishing off of the block for the Saints' 25-19 win in Set 3.
Santa Fe was able to pick up the first conference win of the year, using a fast start to cruise to a 25-15 score in Set 4.
Madison Sheffield continued her strong start to the 2021 season, totaling 16 kills, 17 digs, and two blocks.
Samantha Caglianone had a season-high 11 kills while hitting for a .379 percentage, while Crofts hit .538 and amassed five blocks.
The Cheronis Perspective
Head Coach Nick Cheronis: "It's always good to learn while you are winning," said Head Coach Nick Cheronis. "I thought FSCJ played their hearts out and that was a good lesson for us. Conference play has a different intensity to it."
