No. 20 Volleyball Cruises Past Pasco-Hernando in Three Sets
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – No. 20 Santa Fe volleyball swept the two-match season-series with Pasco-Hernando State College, defeating the Bobcats by a 25-17, 25-15, 25-19 margin.
The previous meeting between the two teams on Friday, Jan. 29 went the distance to five-sets, but the Saints were in control throughout Saturday's match on the way to a second straight sweep and the seventh of the season for Santa Fe.
Set 1 – SF 25, PHSC 17
A 6-1 run from the Saints turned a 5-4 lead into an 11-5 advantage, forcing a timeout from the Bobcats.
Santa Fe's lead was never less than four points from that point on in the opening set, and Samantha Caglianone's kill put the final touches on the 25-17 result.
Set 2 – SF 25, PHSC 15
Set 2 continued to be dictated by the Saints and had a similar trend as the first set.
Another 6-1 surge gave SF the upper hand early, 9-4.
The Bobcats had trouble finding the floor with their swings, with Santa Fe winning the vast majority of the long rallies on their way to a 2-0 lead.
Set 3 – SF 25, PHSC 19
An 11-1 start to the third and final set put the Saints in control, once again forcing a Pasco-Hernando timeout.
Although the Bobcats were able to draw to within five points on three separate occasions, Santa Fe remained in firm control and was never troubled, executing well in all areas of the game to earn win No. 10 of the season.
Key Statistics
The Saints totaled 60 digs as a team, limiting the Pasco-Hernando attack.
Madison Sheffield had her third double-double of the season, contributing 12 kills and 15 digs. Katelyn Crofts continued to excel with blocking, adding four rejections.
The Cheronis Perspective
Head Coach Nick Cheronis: "That was probably our most consistent level of execution we have had all year. I give our team a lot of credit coming off two matches yesterday and then having to battle a well-coached Pasco Hernando team."
Cheronis was particularly pleased with the play of the sophomore outside hitter, Sheffield.
"Madison Sheffield continues to lead us in almost every area of our team, on and off the court."
