No. 17 Volleyball Rolls Past Gulf Coast and Lake-Sumter

LEESBURG, Fla. - It was a great day for No. 17 Santa Fe volleyball as they went 2-0 on the court. The Saints were on the road for a tri-match against the Gulf Coast State College Commodores in match one and the host Lake-Sumter State College Lake Hawks in match two. 
 
Entering the day, No. 17 Santa Fe's last five wins had all been sweeps, and the streak extended to seven on Saturday. 
 
Match 1 - No. 17 Santa Fe College 3, Gulf Coast State College 0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-21)
It didn't come easy, but the Saints won the first match of the day by a score of 25-17, 25-19, 25-21. Madison Sheffield and Katelyn Crofts led the Saints in kills against the Commodores, with 11 and 10 respectively. Kariana Ayala had 30 digs and Maria Hernandez led with 34 assists. Hernandez currently ranks No. 7 in the NJCAA Division I in both assists (506) and assists/set (10.12).

"Hats off to Gulf Coast, we had to work our rear ends off to beat them. We had 120 attempts and 85 digs in just three sets. That tells you how tough of a match that was."
 
Match 2 - No. 17 Santa Fe College 3, Lake-Sumter State College 0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-9)
The Saints completed their second sweep of the day, winning 26-24, 25-17, and 25-9. Mikayla Collins led this game with 11 kills, hitting .500. Emily Register accounted for five of the Saints nine blocks.

"The story of this match was Mikayla Collins. She came in and completely stabilized our side of the net in every phase of the game. It was a very mature effort by her when things weren't going very well."
 
Postseason Update
After Daytona State defeated Pensacola State College, the Saints secured their spot in the NJCAA Region 8 Championships from March 25 to March 27. 
 
Up Next
No. 17 Santa Fe (13-2, 4-0 MFC) continues their impressive season on Saturday, March 6 at Pensacola State College. The match will begin at 2:00 p.m. 
 
The matchup with the Pirates is the first of two Mid-Florida Conference matches to conclude the regular season. Santa Fe will also travel to No. 18 Daytona State College on Wednesday, March 10.
